The concept of horsepower was introduced as a means to describe the power of steam engines during the Industrial Revolution. James Watt, a key innovator during this period, coined the term when he needed to compare the power output of steam engines to that of draft horses, which was the labor force people were familiar with. This enabled people to understand and appreciate the power and efficiency of these new machines.
